Lock the doors

Yesterday started out fine, a few systems to fix, not many PATA computers. Then at lunch we had two problems coincidentally go wrong at the same time. First our network went wonky. Then in the process of diagnosing this our ISP had troubles. So from noon till closing we had no network and not internet. And of course all the systems I was working on needed access for one reason or another. Then the phone started ringing and customers surged thru the door. And with only two of us today(figures) we were run off our feet. Thankfully today the ISP is back up and running and I figured out our network problems. Fingers crossed today goes better.

Dec. 1st

December first! Wow how the time flies. No snow yet but the temperature is dropping so it could happen at any time. We have 80% of our lights up outside as well as the Christmas tree inside. Later than usual due to lots of stuff going on atm. Other than that not much new. SSDD. Just thought I had better post before my page was empty. :)

Complete Idiot

I am a complete idiot. As any readers of this blog who use Firefox know my content section has covered over my banner for some time. It worked fine in IE6 and I thought it was going to be a hard fix so I procrastinated for over a year. With IE7 out now the problem has cropped up in it as well so I figured I had better take a look. Two minutes into looking I discovered my error. Banner height 239. Area sectioned off for banner 39. I dropped the 2 somewhere. When I added 2 to 39 my banner now appears correctly. My site looked like crap for over a year because I did not feel like looking at the problem. Doh!

No eye for size

So we headed down to Burlington on Saturday with a list a mile long of things to do. First stop was Costco to pick up cheap bulk supplies. Next was a short jaunt into Lee Valley which I posted about earlier. From there we headed to Jennifer's sister-in-law's solo art show. It is all scenery, none of that my dog could do better who knows what the artist was smoking art. A stop at Pet Smart for bird food and a water dish then it was off to the main reason we were here. To cut back some hedges in front of the house of Jennifer's sister's husband's parents. Am I making that too long? The brother in law's parents house?
Anyway, Jennifer had said or I thought she had said they were as tall as her and we were cutting them down by half. So we pull into the driveway and here are two bushes on either side of the steps that are 10' tall? More? and then a hedge in front of the porch about 10-15' long and 6' + high. "Is that the hedge we are suppose to cut down?", I said. "It grew a bit since I saw it last.", Jennifer exclaims. "Uh huh.", was my response. Of course it rained with a bit of snow all while we cut and hacked. Which was the reason we had put it off the weekend before as it was pouring. Apparently the weathergods were not ammused by this and decided to insure we got wet. :) A surprisingly quick two hours later the look of the house was changed completely. Gone was the wall of green replaced by a porch with steps and a nice black and white paint job. And moonlights that had long ago been engulfed by the scrubs. Jennifer claims they will grow back and look nice in 3 or 4 years but looking at the twigs we left I have to wonder. Brother in laws parents were very happy, mother practically jumping for joy. Pizza and homemade muffins followed and then we were on our way home. It was cold and damp but fun nonetheless.

Ever had one of those days(weeks)

We have been down 2 people for the last week with holidays. Both took the same week off figuring it would not be busy. So far it has been the busiest I have ever seen it. I have been swamped, deluged, buried, crushed under the systems coming in for repair and the new systems going out. When this is all done I will need a holiday. :) Of course to top it off the systems in for repair are messing with me. PATA computers one and all.

Calgon take me away...................

Tattoos

Many readers will know that back in May on my birthday I got my first tattoo. A small blue gecko on my left shoulder with U.N.C. written in the dots in rememberance of my uncle who had passed away some months before. I knew then it would not be my last tattoo. :) After seeing Girl and Geek's mirror tattoo's we decided that it was a cool idea. Thus we came up with our own. Each of the dog paws is an actual print from our two Staffordshire Bull Terriers Rubie and Pearl.

Jenn's is on the back of her left shoulder:

Mine os on the front of my left shoulder:

In need of a change

I have not updated my blog colours or style in I don't know how long. Now I am getting an urge to change things up. It has also been a long time since I did anything with MovableType. Enough time that it will take a while to get back into the swing of things. I also know my database has to be getting quite large. Is it time to start totally fresh? Wipe the slate clean and create a new blog? Another MovableType or some other newer blog software?

Then of course I read this and realize the history I would lose by shutting down and starting over.

Life in the fast lane

Inspired by:
When Food Becomes A Task

Why is fast paced pretty much the only way people do things today? When did 24 hours in a day become too little time? I think we all need to slow down. Enjoy life rather than speed thru it. How much have we missed by rushing around? NExt time you are out doing something take your time. Don't rush. Simply enjoy the moment.

Been a while

So here I am. Been what, weeks since I posted last? Not much new to report. Took last week off and did some work around the house. Painting doors and such. I can see now why people move to vinyl, aluminum, and steel over wood. They never need maintenance whereas wood needs almost yearly work.

Truer words were never spoken

"There's an old saying in politics: Anyone dumb enough to run for the job is probably too stupid to have it"

Ralph Klein really sums it up in that one sentence. Smart people are smart enough to avoid politics. So who is left? All the dumb people. Who just had a lightbulb pop on over their head? Yeah, stupid people run the world.

Gaming

Up until recently World of Warcraft has been my mainstay game. I have a Druid at 60 and then a multitude of characters between 20 and 35. The big surprise in WoW is that once you hit 60 you have two paths to choose. PvP or Raider. Neither of which appeals to me thus my recent cancelling of my WoW subscription. Which has left me in need of a new game. EVE kept me occupied for a few months but in all honesty it is simply too big for me. And entire universe........0.0 Then Auto Assault came out and seemed like a perfect match. Driving and Destroying, two of my favorite things. Mwahaha! It keeps you busy, you never have to grind to level. The quests do that for you. Problem is at least for me they all start to feel the same. AA is fun but something is keeping me from really liking it. So now what? Looks like EQ2. Similar to WoW but many people seem to think it is better. Thus I am about to try it out and see if it can keep my attention.

First Tattoo

Here it is. a picture of my first tattoo moments after the unveiling. I have wanted a tattoo for years but never knew what to get or where. A tattoo is a big decision, a fairly permanent one. So I knew if I really really wanted one it would have to be special. My uncle passing away last October pretty much made my decision. I called him Unc for as long as I can rememeber, probably my whole speaking life. So when we were in the tattoo place a few weeks back and I saw this little guy I knew he was right. The three yellow circles on his back would spell out U N C. Not really sure what he would say as he did not like tattoo's. For all I know he is up there shaking his head and laughing.

Here we go again

Some of you will remember about 4 years ago in the middle of winter we had a nasty ice storm here which took down trees and power lines leaving us in the dark for 4 days. Well we have just experienced another blackout. This time caused by Indians rather than ice. Thankfully it lasted 36 hours rather than 4 days. It has also shown that few people are prepared for any kind of disaster. At least we had the BBQ to cook on. I highly recommend everyone have a propane BBQ.
The surreal part of it all was going to the local grocery stores who were running on generator to keep the freezers going. Outside everything was shutdown. Walk in to Sobey's and the lights are on, AC is running. Even the Debit machines were up. Very weird.
Needless to say we are now back up and running. It does make you think though. We do need to prepare more. Just in case.

Jobs that deserve a little notice

Notice is not the word I want to use but the right word is evading me. Anyway, as I walked to work this morning I saw some workers who probably go unnoticed in their jobs but without them we would be screwed. So I thought I would make a little post about them.
Garbage and Recycle Truck drivers
Think about it. You put your garbage or blue box out and probably never think twice about what would happen if there was no garbage or recycle box collection. In our throwaway society if they did not exist we would be neck deep in garbage.
Road Construction workers
We curse and swear when our daily route is messed up by road constructions but again without them where would we be? Can you imagine trying to get around if we had nothing but dirt roads or worse? They risk getting creamed by fast moving traffic to keep us on running straight and true.
Downtown Garbage Bag Guy(Sanitation Engineer?)
No idea what they are called but they are the people who keep the garbage pails empty downtown. They also pick up the crap that litters the streets.
Hats off to jobs we never think about but that keep our lives running clean and smooth.

Have you ever..............

During one of the moments where your not really doing anything and your mind drifts I got to thinking back many moons ago when I was a young teenager. I had a 10-speed, one of those with the skinny tires that you could peddle the living crap out of and fly like the wind. With brakes that never seem to work as good as you would hope. Anyhow, I remember bombing along one day flying down this road. Up ahead was the street we lived on. A rather busy street. As I am coming up to the corner I apply the brakes which of course seem to do nothing. So in a moment of blind stupidity I decide that the brakes will not stop me and that it would be better just to keep peddling and zip right across. I think I might have taken a cursory glance to see what was coming but by the time I could actually see down the road I could not have stopped. I made it, pulled the brakes hard and stopped on our neighbours driveway which thankfully went uphill. Looking back I know that had I been seconds faster or slower I would have either nailed a car or had a car nail me.

So have you ever done anything blazingly stupid and known after the fact that you could have easily been killed? I would imagine everyone has at one time or another.

EVE is in, WoW is out, AC2 still rules

So for the last year+ I have been hooked on World of Warcraft. It had kept me playing right up until I hit level 60. then the tire blew. WoW up to 60 is a fantastic game. Solo, group, it matters little. Once at 60 though the entire game changes. Raids are a must forcing you to set aside many hours at a time. PvP is the only other avenue past 60 and one I refuse to travel down. So as my one year aniversary of playing WoW hit I found myself playing less. The fun was gone. How weird that this huge, fantastic game had only held my interest for a year. Asheron's Call 2, a game many will laugh at as a huge MMORPG joke held me for two and a half years. Go figure. So what is a guy suppose to do now? Try something totally different. EVE Online. You are a character although you never actually see yourself except in your portrait. You actually spend all your time flying a ship or ships. From Indy's (type of freighter) to Frigates, Cruisers, Battleships, Carriers, the list goes on and on. As does what you can do. Missions range from simple pickup and delivery to bounty hunting. Or you can mine. Or do any number of other things. Best part about EVE is the fact there is no leveling per se. You train skills that allow you to pilot better ships or use better equipment. These skills train in real time so no one can get a leg up by playing 24/7. Real time is the same everywhere. So far it is fun. Fun enough I signed up for a Power of 2 second account. The first game I have ever had multiple accounts in. That should say it all.
Go try it. EVE-Online.

Two things people really need to do

There are two things I feel every person should do at least once. One will give perspective on the rest of their life. I'll let you decide which that is.
1) Every person should work in retail for at least a year. Those who have never worked retail really have no appreciation for those who do.
2) You should own a Staffordshire Bull Terrier at least once. They definitely need the right owner but what you get back from them makes it so worth it. I have never seen a dog so loving and willing to please, that wants to be with you all the time for no reason other than just because.

Stunner of the day

A customer of ours recently had his hard drive fail. It spun but that was all. Even after telling him I would have to put a new hard drive in and reinstall windows he asked, "But my files are still okay."
Uh, no. They are there but unaccessible. Of course he had no backups of these important files. So off the drive went to be recovered. We received a call today from the company asking for no/go. Cost. $2200 Canadian....before tax.

Happy New Year!

So here we are the first day of 2006. A new year, a fresh start. We stayed up to ring in the new year as I imagine most do. Our night consisted of watching Star Wars Episodes II and III. Thrilling eh? hehe
And of course to celebrate the new year I have started a new woodworking project, a Deacon's Bench for the front hall. A place to store our winter hats and gloves as well as sit to put on boots. I think I will dedicate this project to my Uncle Paul who pretty much got me interested in woodworking.

She makes a lot of sense

I generally read this Blog every other day. It is a nice easy read that is filled with a mix of everything. Sometimes it is funny, other days it makes you think. It is always filled with Common Sense. The quote below really hits the nail on the head.

Kids of all economic levels have more choices than anyone in my generation ever did. All it takes is some God-given common sense to make the right one. But wait: Perhaps that's the problem. Maybe the youth of the 21st century have too many choices. The world may be their oyster, but all they're willing to do is sit back, chew on the sand, and blame someone else for swiping their pearl.

Go give it a read. Enjoy. Pass it on.

2nd Anniversary

Today Jennifer and I celebrate our second Anniversary. We met almost 5 years ago. Yet it seems we've known each other longer. Our Weding was small, we actualyl had it at the house. It snowed the night before and we were greeted in the morning with about 6 inches of the white stuff and it was still coming down. Then we got the call. Tara, Jennifer's Maid of Honour had ditched her car about 30 minutes from here. So bright and early with snow a falling and streets all crappy Jennifer sets out to rescue her. Nice way to start the day eh? At leaast it all ended well. It was a day to remember, with lots of moments that bring a smile to your face.

Happy Anniversary my love.

"We only got a dusting of snow."

That is what Jennifer said when she looked out the window this morning. I went downstairs to let the dogs out and wondered what her idea of dusting was as Ruby leaped out into 6-8 inches of the white stuff. Saffie refused to go out and would have surely disappeared had she attempted it. "Yeah, we only got a dusting.............about 6 inches or so." I replied when I got back upstairs.

God and Heaven

What do you think? Is there an all seeing being? A creator of all life? Is there a god? What about heaven? Does it exist? Or is it a myth created to calm our mortal fears of dying?
I am not a church person, don't really have a religion. But I have always assumed there was a god up there. Same with heaven. But sometimes you begin to wonder. Will you go to a 'better' place when you die? Will I see all the people who have died over the years? Will they look the same as the last time I saw them? If there is a god then why did said people die?
Questions that will most likely never be answered until that fateful day.

The wrong way to renovate

I have walked by this house I don't know how many times over the years. It is a small unasssuming house. Or was......
Sunday while driving home from Aunt Carol's jennifer tells me to go around the block. No reason why, just, "I can't explain, you have to see it." this was what we saw.

Apparently they had just finished redoing the inside of the house and decided to expand the partial basement into a full basement. Father and son were doing the work. They lifted the house on two steel I beams and set to work removing the dirt beneath with a bobcat. They were actually under the house moments before the colapse. Pizza saved the day. Headed up to eat the just arrived pizza they heard a creaking and groaning and bolted seconds before one I beam gave way and the house fell into the hole. Lucky.
The house is a write off. No insurance to cover it. It will have to be torn down and a proper basement installed then a new house built on top. Main thing is no one was killed. The two dogs and geckos in the house at the time survived as well.
Like I say, lucky.

Unc

Things remembered about Uncle Paul:
He built me a desk when I was in Public School. I still have it today.
We built my computer desk and Display Case for my Model Tow Truck.
We also built two fences (his and ours), three decks(two at his house and my cousin's), and a porch roof. Our front screen door was installed by us as well.
Future projects had included a deck by the pond and a deck on the roof of the veranda.
He could build just about anything you could make with wood.
There were very few questions he could not answer.
He drove a 1976 Cougar XR7. Black of course. Hot car. :) Wish I had it now.
Him, my dad, Lori(cousin) and I use to drive around Simcoe when we came down for vacation.
When I was little he was the biggest guy I knew. 6'4"
He was a big part of so many children's lives. He loved kids and they loved him.
We use to wrestle with him. He always won. :) Same with arm wrestling.
He would do anything for you, all you had to do was ask.
He fixed a garage window at my Granny's house that I broke.
He plowed snow for the town. No one was better.
He use to drive dump truck for my Grandad. One day when I was riding with him as we got ready to dump a load of dirt he told me to jump out in case front end lifted in the air. I did. It didn't.
He was quite the joker.
I can't imagine how many people he knew and who knew him.

I realized today I could never picture him as an old man. Now I know why.

Or phone calls when you are not expecting any. You hear the pnone and the first thing you think is OMG, something is wrong. Most times it is nothing. This morning it was something. Our phone rang at 7:14am this morning. It was my cousin's husband. My Uncle Paul had passed away overnight. Him and Aunt Carol had went to Las Vegas to celebrate their anniversary. They were due to fly home tomorrow.
It all seems so unreal.

Katrina

In my previous post I mentioned how outrageous the price of gas had become. 20 cent increase overnight. The reason for the jump is the fact Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf States and their oil production. 20 oil rigs missing, refinery's incapacitated. Fears of an oil shortage rise.
In truth that all really pales on comparison to what Mississippi and Louisianna are going through. Watching CNN and hearing how New Orleans was 20 feet below sea level and the levees protecting it were vunerable had people fearing the worst. Then the hurricane past and the levees held. Whew! Dodged a bullet there. But Katrina was simply teasing New Orleans. After she had passed the levees broke.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those left homeless, cityless down south. We can only hope that help arrives quickly and people are at the very least given shelter and food. Property can be replaced. Lives can't.

AC2 done Dec. 30th 2005

What a lot of players knew and viewed as inevitable became reality yesterday. Asheron's Call 2 will close it's doors December 30th 2005. It's a sad day for me as AC2 was my first online game and even though it never really took off and I eventually got bored and left I had hoped Turbine could recover and turn it in to the game I had hoped it would be. But now that will never happen. Even with the release of the expansion pack they did not pick up enough new players to keep going. I fear word had gotten around to online game players that AC2 was a game to be avoided.

A moments silence if you please.

The Job

So I build/repair/sell computers. Most are for personal use at home. But some go beyond the home. Recently the company I work for got a contract for 125 new computers for the University of Western Ontario. Each computer I build will be used by dozens of students. My work will touch probably thousands of people. Thinking about that I wondered what a person that builds cars thinks of his/her job. I mean he/she builds or helps build thousands of cars that then go all over the world to be driven by many.
Sometimes you just have to stop and say, "wow".

Criss Angel WTF???

So we watched Criss Angel's MindFreak last night and now I want to know how he did the levitation. I mean David Blaine's secret is out and fairly obvious once you know how it is done. But Criss Angel...........he levitated a good 30-40cm off the floor and onto a chair in the middle of a room. He also levitated up a moving escalator. Not too easy to raise yourself up on one foot doing any of that. Then to top it off he levitates people out in the open with witnesses all around.
So tell me, how does he do it?

Lacking a little something

Have you ever wondered if when you were born you ended up missing out on some vital component you would need later in life? I think I missed out on the Universal Translator. I cannot get my brain around anyone with an accent. They talk and my ears feed me gibberish leaving my brain to try and wrap itself around what was just said. I have never had the knack of being able to understand accents. I end up cobbling things together and hoping I am agreeing to the right thing. Thankfully we don't have may customers with accents.

F1 In the US

Formula One held it's race in the United States over the weekend and it was a bit of a fiasco. Seven teams pulled out due to possible problems with their tires. Michelin, the tire supplier for the teams said the tires may not hold up under the stresses of the race. FIA would not allow them to change them or add a chicane to slow the cars down. Michelin told the teams what may happen. They pulled out of the race. And people are sreaming bloddy murder at the teams and Michelin. Why? Yes motor racing is dangerous. But all the precautions are taken to ensure it is as safe as possible. In this race Michelin thought their tires could endanger the drivers and tried to make changes. When that could not be done they warned the teams who boycotted the race. I think we should be glad. Imagine if the drivers had raced and one or more had been killed.

I had forgotten what it was like........

Since my last CPU/Motherboard upgrade I have been using the stock Intel heatsink. It has done an okay job, not phenomenal. I knew going in though the summer heat would cause some problems as my computer room has no A/C. Sure enough the first hot day my computer shutdown due to thermal overload when I was gaming. Thus the race was on to find a better heatsink. Thermalright's XP-90C was chosen due to it being the best one going. Vantec 92mm 119cfm fan topping it allowed for quiet while surfing the web with plenty of reserve for heavy duty hot weather gaming.
Result:
I can run World of Warcraft on my machine now with the case side on and have a CPU temperature no warmer than what the stock Intel heatsink with case side off ran idle.
Stock Heatsink side off idle temp: 53 degrees
XP-90C side on gaming temp: 54 degrees.
Much better.

June - A bad month for shipping??

I have had nothing but trouble with getting things shipped to me the last little while. First the whole ebay thing with the not so great seller. Then I order some parts for my Xmods from a company I have dealt with many times before. Now all of a sudden they say I am a first time credit card buyer and I need to get my address approved. WTF??? Then today I get a notice from Bigfoot where I am getting a new heatsink for my computer to cool it down that they can't send the order because my credit card address does not match my delivery address. Doh! Knew I should have sent it COD.
I am not patient to begin with when it comes to deliveries and this is not helping.

So now I have a link here from Dizzarian, a guild I play online games with. I hooked up with them waaayyy back when Asheron's Call 2 came out. A better bunch of guys and gals your not going to find. The site has forums for most online games plus general and for ranting. It's really a site for like minded people to gather and chat and have a good time. I think if we never played another online game we would still gather there to chat. It's like an extended online family.
If you are an online gamer check it out. Even if your not it is worth a looksee.
:)

What do you think?

Ponder this:
Star Wars III Revenge of the Sith has just hit the big screen. Suppose I want to see it now but do not care if I see it on the big screen. Would it be wrong to download a copy now to look at t home? I will buy the DVD the second it hits the stores but that is months away.

What do you think?

Bittersweet day at work

Today was one of those bittersweet days at work.

The Bitter
It was SMooSH's AKA - Ashenfield - AKA Nerd - AKA - "Smells like butter" last day at work. For the last five years he has worked with me and Neal in the 'backroom' working on computers. He remembered what I forgot and I remembered what he forgot. We bounced ideas off each other solving weird and wacky problems. He will be missed.

The Sweet
The reason he is leaving is Loba - AKA - 'His better half' - AKA - "The GF"

They first met a year ago and it was pretty obvious the time would come where he would have to decide which path to follow. The girlfriend won out. (It would have been odd and deserved a smack upside the head had he choosen us over the GF) :)
I wish him all the best in his new life. He made a good choice in Loba and I must say she did in him. Best wishes and many happy days SMooSH.

The Baldman Ebays

It's funny how things go. Radio Shack in the USA and Canada have parted ways. RS up here is now The Source by Circuit City. Not a huge thing really. Except for the fact that since they are no longer Radio Shack they no longer carry Xmods and Zip Zaps. For those who are not in the know these are small 1/28 scale and fit in your hand scale radio controlled cars. I have collected them for a couple of years now. First Zip Zaps then Xmods. It was a bit of a blow to find out I will no longer be able to buy them in Canada. :( Thus we come to Ebay. I have stayed away from Ebay due to the simple fact they sell WAY too many cool things I would love to own. So I have looked and browsed but avoided buying anything. Until now. They become the only real place to buy Xmods that delivers to Canada. RS in the states will not. I will try to control myself and not go crazy (too late) buying up tons of stuff. I can see how it could become addictive as you see all the things you want.

Bald Man Conclusion of the Day

"There is no one on god's green earth that deserves more than $100000 a year in salary. No one."

Sport Star - Right. For what? Playing a game?
Lawyer - No contest. They screw everyone so they can rake in the dough.
Corporate Executive - Most haven't got the brains to deserve 1/3 of what they get paid.
The list goes on......................

A couple of interesting facts on Staffordshire Bull Terriers

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was listed as one of the top 10 breeds for children out of a study of 162 breeds by the University of Southampton’s Anthrozoology Institute.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club performs breed rescue and has taken 220 calls in the last 10 years. Of those 220 calls, 5 of the dogs were Staffordshire Bull Terriers. That translates to a 99% misidentification rate by people that work with dogs every single day.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has never been implicated in an unprovoked attack on humans in this country.

Boredom + Creativity = ?

Sometimes the weirdest ideas come out of nowhere. Last week while cleaning up the computer room I got it in my head to build from Lego a Tow Truck. And not just any old plain jane tow truck but a triple axle big nasty pull the world tow truck.

It began life as all Lego does. Peices:

The basic chassis or how it was suppose to look according to the instructions on the kit I am using as the basis of the tow truck. At this point I have no idea if my plan to stretch the chassis will work or fail.

Deciding to work the second axle in first I stretched the rear of the truckto make room.

With that done I added the cab and then stretched the middle of the chassis to allow the third axle which is can be raised and lowered via air.

More pictures to follow once I have progressed further. I am attempting to make the entire truck fully fuctional with the use of an air pump and tiny air powered hydralic rams. Time will tell if all the ideas floating around in my head make it out.

How lucky

Every once and a while it hits me just how lucky I was the night I sent Jennifer the ICQ message. It was shortly after 11pm, the chances of her responding slim. But she did! How many planets had to align for this to happen? Her ICQ could have been long dormant. She could have simply ignored me. My computer may have crashed and her number deleted.
How lucky am I?

And luckier yet she married me. :)

Canada no longer a Democracy??

The bill banning certain dog breeds has swept past its second reading and is looking more and more like it will become law. This is happening even with overwhelming evidence that the ban will not work. And with people left and right wanting them to rework the bill so that it actually gets who it is suppose to. How can this happen? Should the Politicians not be reading all the information they can and coming to that conclusion? Apparently not. Most of them cannot even pick out the dogs they are banning. They simply read the headlines in the newspaper saying another pit bull attack and go from there. Typical.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned to someone how commewnt spamming on ROABM had stopped. Perhaps they had gotten smart? Nope. They are back at it. For what purpose I do not know. None of the comments get through unless I say so which means they gain nothing. Pretty much oges to show comment spammers are pretty dumb.

A day like no other

You know, I can't even really describe today. No words can do it justice. You really had to be there. All I can say is:
I met the first person today I could really imagine coming into the store and gunning us all down.
And SpongeBob wanted to wash our windows.

UPDATE:
She came back in today.

I will try to explain this woman. She had apparently been in three times the day before and talked in circles for better than an hour and ended up buying nothing. Then this morning she comes in.
Woman: I want to buy a plain case that locks.
Me: We don't have any.
Woman: {Queer look at me} You don't?
Me: No. The only cases we sell that lock are the higher end gamer cases.
Woman: Well I don't want one of those. Just a plain case. {gear change} What do these cases cost?
Me: $XXX
Woman: For the whole tower.
Me: No. Just the empty case.
Woman: {gear change} I want to buy a plain computer case that locks.
Me: We don't sell them.
By this time a co-worker she had been talking to yesterday comes around behind her and gives me the get rid of her look.
Woman: {gear change} Do you want to sell me a computer?
Me: We don't sell locking cases.
She did finally leave. For the moment. She returned that afternoon to look at notebooks. Laptops actually. Calling them notebooks in front of her garnered a weird look from her. She knew she wanted Service Pack 2 installed. Free of charge by us because it was the lastest thing. She also kept trying to get the laptop at a discount since they were 'display models'. The one she wanted had never actually been turned on, it was just out for show. Her fav line was, "If you put Service Pack 2 on I will buy it." She repeated that a number of times. Finally I ended up dealing with her when she asked about a word program she could 'double space' in. I said, "Oh, you want a Word Processor." Weird look like "What the hell are you talking about?" This lasted for about an hour at which point my co-worker totally frustrated by her told her she had been in the store several times and just ran around in circles making people crazy. Well you could have pushed her over with a feather. She got all flustered at the realizing she had been here before. Grabbed her coat and bag and headed for the door. The coat and the bag are another story. On the floor I nearly stepped on the coat and bag on two ocassions, both which garnered a, "Don't step on those! I have important stuff in them!"
THe third trip in she talked to the third fellow. Rambled on actually. Then as she was leaving she turns and comes back.
Woman: What was your name?
Matt: Matt.
Woman: Max?
Matt: Matt.
Woman: Matthew.
Matt: Yes.
Woman: Are you sure that is your name?
Matt: As far as I know it is.

UPDATE:
She came back in today, 10 minutes before opening. This time she talked about how are floor dated the store and what we need to do to update. Then the owner took over. 30 minutes later she left saying she would return with someone to register the laptop under since she was paranoid about the government getting ahold of her data. The second trip in she mentioned she was going to sue another local computer store for stealing her data. And the kicker. She had been arrested for assaulting a police offocer. Of course she was sueing them for assaulting her.
Oh man.........................

You learn something new every day

It seems you never stop learning. There is always something coming up you have not seen before.
A lady brought her computer in saying MusicMatch would not work. It opened and the immediately closed. Upon logging into the system I clicked the icon and found it worked. Well, at least worked in the Admin account. In her's it opened and shut. Weird. They run from the same place, what could be wrong? Checking the Advanced Properties for MusicMatch I found a checkmark in "Run in Win95 Compatibility Mode". Uncheck that and MusicMatch worked! Go figure. How it got there who knows? All I know is unchecking that fixed the problem.
You learn something new every day.

I'm on a bandwagon

A few quotes I found that seem appropriate.

"Owners should be responsible for properly training and socializing dogs of all breeds and ensuring that dogs are not allowed to roam free."

"A severe injury or death from dog attacks is more likely to be caused by a bad owner than a bad dog, something that is often overlooked in the emotional aftermath of a tragic incident."

"The aggression in the Pit today is a complete affront to it's breed history...and it is manufactured...not "innate"."

"The type of dog responsible for the most attacks or deaths changes almost annually and is often determined by how popular the breed is. In the '90s, for example, as more people wanted to protect their homes, the popularity of Rottweilers soared. An all-time high of 93,656 Rotts were registered with the American Kennel Club in 1995. (In comparison, there were 18,141 Dobermans registered that year.)"

Muwaaahaahaha!!!!

If you have not noticed yet please be aware of the fact MT3.11 and Blacklist2.0 have effectively shut down spamming ba$tard$. Yes that is right. Spammers beware. There is a new sheriff in town. First off all comments must be approved by me first before ever getting to see the light of public consumption. Secondly Blacklist 2.0 catches know bad sites and blocks them outright. So spam all you want you idiots. I am watching.

Link Issues

The Blog is pretty much back together again. Only a couple of issues to deal with. Links to pictures and webpages are not working so you may see some garbage in certain posts. With 500+ posts it will take me a while to get all mistakes correct manually so bear with me. :)

EDIT:
I LOVE MT's Search & Replace feature!!! It seached through every entry for the garbage replacing < and > and put them back. No hours of editing every last entry.
Whew!

New Blog

You may have noticed things are looking a little different around here. As often happens things do not work easily. To upgrade to MT 3.11 I had to rip the guts out of my blog and redo it. Thus the plain jane looke for the moment. She may not look pretty but underneath Blacklist 2.0 and MT3's new features are hopefully keeping me safe from spammers.

Time for a fresh start?

As most are probably unaware I have been working in the background trying unsuccessfully to upgrade from MovableType 2.63 to 3.11. I want all the extra cool stuff like comment spam control but am unsure how far I am willing to go. Is it perhaps time to do a complete overhaul on my blog? Start fresh?

Boredom

I was bored on Sunday and in my boredom I came up with a built this:

I figured it was cheaper to built this than to buy a toolbox that would be 'okay' but not 'perfect'. Since it was built with scrap wood it was basically free. :)
It turned out pretty good considering I had nothing written down. The plans were entirely in my head. I can sit and draw something out on paper with all the measurements but for some reason I find working from the 'brain plan' just works better for me. Mind you Jennifer wants sdie tables for the bedroom..............may have to put those down on paper. :)

Olympic hopes dashed

The first week the excuse was, "our best chances for medals are all next week."
This week the excuse is, "we need more money."
Canada may not get into double digit medals this Olympics which is causing a huge stir in althletics around the country. What went wrong? How can we fix it? Money and the lack of it is always tops on the list. And the government is always to blame for not giving enough tax dollars to help out athletes. My question is what does the government sacrifice? Health? Education? Roads? And how do the Athletes defend them getting more money at the cost of one of the above? Yes the athletic programs need more funding but why should Canadians pay more taxes or give up something just so every couple of years we can put people into the Olympics and hope to get a shiny round piece of medal?
Thoughts? Alternatives?

Respect and the Common Child

I am sure most people have noticed that today's child seems to have no respect for anything. Being disrespectful seems to be the norm rather than the oddity. Why has this happened? What has changed? I can't really blame the child themselves. You learn to give respect. What I do see as the three big problems are:
1) The parents. Be it not enough time to give to the child due to both parents working or being a single parent it matters not. Children today seem to have to grow up on their own without parental guidance more and more. Some parents also don't seem to care what their child is out doing. "Long as they are out of my hair."
2) Too much free time. "Idle hands do the devils work." Kids with nothing to do after school gather together and typically get into mischief.
3) TV. To some extent shows like Bevis & Butthead and The Simpsons show kids disrespecting left and right. This added to a lack of teaching from the parents continues the downward spiral.

Solutions?

Trim line size

When your weed trimmer says use 0.065 line don't use 0.08. Strangely enough thicker line will break easier than thin if thin is what you are suppose to use.

Election in Canada

Today I did something which most likely no other person in my small town will do. I rejected my ballot. And in the process confused the two little old ladies running the booth. Why did I do this? Well mostly to confuse the two little old ladies at the booth. :) But more because I do not trust any of the candidates.
Conservative - Too much not said. Too Pro US.
Liberal - Too many screw ups behind closed doors.
NDP - Not sure I trust where they are coming from.

6 months

Yesterday, June 14th marked Jennifer and myself's 6 month anniversary. We have been married 1/2 a year. Go us! :) Six months ago we were in the midst of one of the worst snowstorms of the year. The day started off well with the Maid of Honour called to say she was in a ditch 30 minutes from town. So Jennifer went out in the snow and rescued her before heading off to get their hair done. I stayed home and paced the floor.
Apprently much to my surprise I was the calm one that day. Instead of as expected me being the nervous wreck it was in fact Jennifer. She remembers little of the wedding past coming down the stairs.

I've had it sitting on my server for months now had forgot about it. So today I figured I should change my stylesheet to the 'Spring' sheet. I hoped to change looks more often but so far that has not happened. :)

Survivor: The Final

Well Survivor ended last night pretty much as was expected. Rob and Amber in the Final 2. Happily Rob lost. I did not like him in the last Survivor, I did not like him in Allstars.
At the Reunion show the players were quite divided on the game.
Rich put it it's just a game, not real life.
Lex was more the game mirrors real life and shows how far you will go to get what you want.
Colby tried to play the game with the integrity he has in RL.
Rupert played as a man of his word.
'Boston' Rob meanwhile tossed out all morals and conscience and lied, cheated, and backstabbed his way into the Final 2.
Jeff summed it up by saying each person draws their own line in the sand as to how far they are willing to go to win.
To me whether in a game or in real life you need to be true to yourself, your conscience should guide you. If you shake someones hand and promise them something that is your word and you have to stand by it. Plain and simple. I can't say how I would play when put in that situation but I hope I would be honest and trustworthy. Of course this would get me kicked off the island for sure. :)

Star Wars and Lego

Most people reading this blog are probably unaware that I am a huge Star Wars fan. I have seen each movie probably 15-20 times. Han Solo's Millenium Falcon ranks as one of my most favorite ships ever.
I also love Lego and have built any number of things over the years including a version of said Han Solo ship. A few years ago Lego released their version of the MF and I had to have it. It had it's flaws which I fixed as best I could and it has held a spot on my shelf for years now. This year Lego decided to rerelease the Millenium Falcon much to my surprise. Looing at the pictures I could see it was a much better representation of "The Fastest Ship In The Galaxy!" I had to have it!
After building it up I placed the old version beside it to compare the two. While the new version was a dead ringer from the outside it's guts were another matter. You could see right through gapping holes in the hull and the interior left a lot to be desired. The old version had the inside done right but the outside was incorrect.
End result: Combine the two to create a better version of the Millenium Falcon.

Here is a picture of the two side by side.

Jack Of All Trades

Tonight I did something I had never thought or imagined I would do. Something Jennifer claims most husbands would never even consider. It did not turn out exactly as planned but was by no means a complete disaster. What did I do? Tonight at Jennifer's request I streaked her hair. Or at least that was the intention. The streaking part did not happen. Well, not quite. :) Her hair was light brown. It is now has a lot of blonde in it. Moreso on the lefthand side. The top and back actually turned out more like she wanted it. Next time it should be better now that I've done it once. The fact she is not running away screaming at the thought of me doing it again is a good sign.

Getting married is costly

In Canada it is tax season and part of that is the calculation of GST refunds. Every four months you could expect a cheque in the mail with free money from the government due to the Goods And Services Tax. I never thought much about it, was a nice little bonus once and a while. I knew that getting married would have an affect on and was prepared. Almost. Yesterday I got a letter in the mail saying that due to the change in my marital status I 'owed' the government $82.50. Ouch. Today I got a notice they had readjusted that and I only owed $69.70. Still ouch just not as bad. Jennfier gets a notice that she is not entitled to a GST refund and owes $165. OUCH!!!
Marriage has been pretty good so far, I highly recommend it. Except for one thing. Don't tell the government. They will find a way to screw you every time.

Do you love chocolate? Maybe not after this.

Today at work Jennifer's diabetes paid off big time.
They are selling 12" chocolate snowmen at 50% off since they are from Christmas. While today one fell off the table and broke. Two fo the girls decided to eat some while Jennifer was a good girl and passed. Turns out this was a good thing. It was discovered later that a mouse had burrowed into the snowman and died. Yup, died. Needless to say the girls were gagging the rest if the day.

If kids are like puppies.......

....then I think I will pass on kids.
Rubie occupies a lot of our time. We must constantly follow her since she is not 100% housebroken yet. She jumps on grammy (mom). She chases her tennis ball under the chairs. She nips at me as I try to get it. She has bully fits(as Jennifer calls them). She chases the cats. In other words she drives me crazy sometimes.
I really don't know how parents do it.

Rubie Updates

A week ago today Rubie went in to be Spade and had two teeth pulled, one of which was actually growing out of the roof of her mouth.
Then last night she did the inevitable. Whenever we let her out in the big yard she has always ran to the fish pond and out onto the ice. Well last night she did this except the ice was no longer thick. Splash! In she goes and starts paddling around. So I had to grab her by the collar and yank her out.
Aren't puppies wonderful?

Canadian music pirates beware

In this mornings Toronto Star the Canadian Music Industry has announced plans to start hunting down Canadian music downloaders. Apparently they have 20 to 40 of the worst offenders lined up and will be petitioning High Speed Internet providers for information pertaining to this illegal activity.
We all knew it was coming, that Canadians would not be spared. Did you think it would happen so soon?

Dogs, Cats, and Barbeque

Pretty strange title eh? I figured it should get me a ton of search engine hits. LOL
Actually it just sort of covered everything on my mind. Today is Saturday thus it is BBQed hamburger night. It will be the first night I have barbequed without my assistant chef Tuck who always came out with me no matter the weather. As bad as walking through the door after work to find him not waiting for me I think this will be worse. The house is a lot quieter now too as I don't have his footsteps matching mine as I walk around. Although I can hear him occasionally, the jingle of his dog tags, the sound of his footsteps.

Death in the Falmily

Today was a sad day for all of us here. Our German Shepard Dog Tuck passed away early this morning at age 11.

After a rather nasty night watching him slowly fade away we decided this morning to have him put to sleep. As I told Jennifer I would rather do that than have him suffer. Tuck had severe arthritis in his spine and hips, liver disease, and a possible tumor on his spleen. Even with all that he upheld the nobility of the GSD name and never let it get him down. Walking into the Vet Clinic he hopped (fell) off the stretcher and struggled to his feet determined to walk to his fate on all four feet.
Tuck was a good dog and will be missed by all, especially Saffie the Daschund his ever present compantion.
I am sure as I write that he is sitting at God's feet in front of a warm fire.

Good bye Tucky Boy. :..(

In surfing blogs lately I have decided it may be time for a change. It seems bland and flat in comparison to others. So in the weeks to come I hope to do some tweaking and adjusting of ROABM. First off I think I need more links to things I like. Hot cars, comics, woodworking, stuff like that.
So hold onto your hats, it may be a bumpy ride. :)

Honda's get better with age?

Today I took the car in for it's Drive Clean test so the license can be renewed. Apparently Honda's get better with age because this test was better than the last one two years ago. Strange. I warmed it up as per last time, took it in same time of year, yet all tests were MUCH better than before. If it keeps going this way the car will be helping reverse pollution. ;)

For those who don't know, here in Canada the government implemented a Drive Clean program to help get cars fixed or off the road that cause a lot of pollution. Cars must be tested every 2 years. Kind of sucks since they test cars like mine that are so far under the bar that its not funny.

It's Official

Yesterday at 2:00pm Jennifer and I were married at our house in front of a small group of friends and family. All went well with only a couple of minor oopsies. :) Of course the day started off on the wrong foot as at 9:10am the Bridesmaid called to say she had spun her car and had a flat tire about 30 minutes from Simcoe. It was snowing quite hard and the roads were nasty. Jennifer had to bundle up and go get her so they could get to the hairdressers to get their hair done. All went smoothly after that thankfully.
We are both glad the day is over.

Do you love money?

I mentioned on a post at Neuroti.ca that no one is worth more than $1000000 a year in salary. Not a doctor, sports star, movie star, etc. I figured the world's money problems could be solved if any money above $1000000 a year was given to those less fortunate.
Apparently such people read said blog. ;) And apparently they like their money. hehe
Since the post was on another topic and I did not want to clutter it with my ramblings I am extending the though here.
My idea would never work because human's are generally too greedy and in love with money and material things to allow it to work. But here we go.
For example. If sports stars saleries were capped at $1000000 a year then the team owner could save a ton of money which in turn is used to 1) lower ticket prices allowing more people to enjoy the sport. 2) Pay other less fortunate employees a little more. 3) Hire a few more employees to lower unemployment. The effect would cascade down the line affecting millions of people.
Who needs more than a million dollars a year anyway? I can see no reason to own a 6.5 million dollar house nor drive a $750000 car. Each year the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This has to stop.
As I write this I know it won't. Why? Because human beings are fixated with money, power, material possessions. Until they get over that the world is not going to get better.

Adults to blame for kids bad behaviour?

Walking to work this morning I was passing by Town Hall and noticed the sign stating "No Roller Blades or Skate Boards allowed". This is the same area in the summer where said Skate Boards and Roller Blades run rampant. Kids blatantly ignore this sign. This got me thinking.
Adults drive down the highway blatantly ignoring the posted speed limit signs while their kids sit in the backseat taking it all in.
Like the commercial says adults steal satellite signals while their kids watch.
Are kids really to blame for all their bad behaviour or are they simply learning by example?
Something for all us adults to think about.

Caught!

As mentioned here SMooSH Space, the little ba$ta*d who broke into the store has been caught. As it turns out he is apparently 16 yrs old. What makes a 16 yr old break into a store?
My next question is what will happen to him? Jail? Slap on the wrist? I personally think they should:
1) Publish his name and picture.
2) Stores should ban him from entry thus embarrassing him in front of his friends.
3) He spends every second of free time for the next year picking up dog $hit in the parks.
4) On Weekends he is placed in the Stocks in Town Square for all to see.

Perhaps I should run for Mayor? Or Prime Minister? I have so many good ideas.

One month to go

According to the Days to Go Calender Jennifer and I have one month left till the wedding. To think in 30 days I will be something I never ever imagined. Married. A Husband. W-O-W...............
We visited the Reverend Monday night and one of the things he did was go over how the ceremony will go. Including all the things that can and often do go wrong. I never knew there was so much to a wedding. Nor that the simple act of placing the ring on Jennifer's finger could entail so many steps to get it right.
As these final 30 days tick by I find myself excited, scared, awed, happy, nervous.

Sad couple of days

The last few days around here have been quite sad.

STEWART - October 23,2003
Thursday Stewart the hamster passed away. He had been wobbly on his feet the last week and not eating. Jennifer was ready to take him to the vet to be put to sleep but he died during the night. He was quite the little fellow and will be missed.

PERCY - October 25,2003
